Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Speech therapy is a key component if your child has ASD. It can be overwhelming in the beginning, but our therapists are here to help. Whether it is still early in the diagnosis process or whether your child has been diagnosed for sometime, there are many goals we can target. In earlier stages, speech-language services may include expanding language (increasing communication), behavioural challenges, and social pragmatics (such as peer and adult interactions, turn-taking, play). During later stages in therapy, goals may include understanding non-literal language, and conversational skills.
- Understanding your child's diagnosis, needs, and goals
- Expressive language: increasing communication through words, longer phrases, gestures, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)
- Receptive language: working on strategies to support your child's understanding and ability to follow directions
- Behavioural challenges related to communication
- Pragmatics: social interactions and conversational skills
